Our Story - Part # 3

We got engaged on the 6th of November 2004 at the Westcliff Hotel in Johannesburg after five years of living together and nine years of friendship.

After the cancer diagnosis, we decided to go ahead with our wedding on 1 October 2005. Fiona must have been one of a handful of brides who was actually bald at her wedding! Okay – she wore a really nice wig!!! The wedding went really well – exactly what we wanted.

As Fiona was on her radiation treatment immediately after the wedding, we delayed our honeymoon until 2006.

In April 2006, we went on honeymoon to the exotic

destination of Vietnam. Before going, we had every jab known to mankind. Each jab was administered with a question as to whether Fiona was pregnant or not. Of course, our answer was “not a chance” as she was on the medicine that inhibited Oestrogen production. Little did we know but Fiona was actually in her first trimester of her pregnancy.

Vietnam was a fantastic destination to visit on the South African Rand. A real eye-opener in terms of one’s mindset and a really beautiful country that we both fell in love with. Early on, we did a trip out of Hanoi to a well known attraction called the Perfume Pagoda. That day was tough as it was warm and getting to the pagoda involved a boat trip down a very scenic river in a sampan followed by an extremely hard walk up the side of a very steep hill. Of course we refused a ride on the cable car as we were fit (only our guide caught the cable car up). Well, we really battled up that hill to the pagoda which was located in a very deep but massive cave at the summit. Little did we realise what a risk that walk was – I wonder how close we were to a miscarriage in the middle of the Vietnamese countryside.

The twins must be tough as they survived all those medicines and the Perfume Pagoda walk! And we had no clue that they were around.

On the way to the Perfume Pagoda - the hill on the right is the one we "walked" up it was very steep.
