SPAR South Rand launched their Women’s 10/5km Challenge at the
M & A Restaurant in Johannesburg on Tuesday 2 September.
From left to right: Sonja Laxton (Grand Master Top runner), Peter Stentiford (Purchase Manager: SPAR South Rand), Edith Venter (Cansa), Fiona Roberts (Cansa), Irvette van Blerk (Top runner), Snow Matthews (President of Central Gauteng Athletics).
A certain percentage of proceeds from race entries will go to the CANSA association which is the charity for the Challenge. The SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge takes place on 12th October at the Old Parktonians Club in Johannesburg

A picture from the event that Fiona gave the guest speech at a few weeks ago. We are soooo proud!

Today the Paralympics ended. we were amazed at (and humbled by) the performances that we saw. Really great stuff. Of course, South Africa's great performances gave us all a bit of hope, following the disasterous Olympics. Nice stuff.

The next big global event is the Soccer World Cup in SA. Quite exciting and one can already feel the hype with construction around and on every corner. Very painful in terms of the traffic but once it is complete it will be fantastic.

The twins are both doing well. Daniel seems to have recovered from his near bronchitits, and Emma, who was never really sick, is seemingly overcoming her minor eye infection.

With everyone on the mend, and spring causing the dusk to be delayed, we have had lots of fun in the garden and around the house. Lots of running around and laughing. Last night, we had a "Find Daddy" game which was great fun - for all. At one stage, I hid behind a curtain and managed get a good reaction out of everyone, including the cat, when I jumped out. Of course, that meant more playing which just before bedtime was not such a good idea. Luckily, our two generally go to bed with very little bother.

We have been asking them how old they are. Within a remarkably short period, they both now respond that they are "two." This is usually accompanied by a seven finger gesture (copying our two finger cue that we used to get the initial learning happening). So nice to see the levels of "sharpness" growing on virtually a daily basis.

Tonight we had the movie "Grey Owl" on TV. Well their reaction to the two baby beavers was spectacular. Both were engrossed with the movie. Nice to see. Of course, this makes the upcoming trip to the Kruger Park even more exciting as we should see something nice. Both can now recognise some of the more common animals like Elephant so we are expecting great screams of joy when they spot their first live Elephant and Giraffe, or even better - a Lion or Leopard! We depart on Saturday.
